Powerpoint 2003 can't open all 2000 ppt files

I have Powerpoint 2000 and recently upgraded to 2003 XP.
For some reason, I now have both of them installed.

The 2003 version will open some of the 2000 .ppt files,
but others it won't open at all and says it can't read
the file. I re-installed 2003 several times, and keep
running into the same roadblock.

Any solutions?

Thanks

[CRITICAL UPDATE - Anyone using Office 2003 should install the critical
update as soon as possible. From PowerPoint, choose "Help -> Check for
Updates".]

Hello Patti,

This sounds like you need to install the critical update for Office 2003:

Just use the Check for Updates command from the Help menu in PowerPoint,
Word, Excel, etc....

I installed Powerpoint 2003 as part of Office 2003 Pro and
find I can't open any files from previous versions (XP,
97) - I keep getting the message that Powerpoint can't
open the file. The only critical update on the office web
site was for Word 2003. So I had to uninstall Office 2003
and reverted to XP. I can't get my money back but this is
very ugly. If there is a fix besides doing an update I'd
like to know. If you solve it with the update then please
post what you did.

Hello,

It sounds like you didn't find the Office critical update.

You can find it by doing the following in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc..

1) Help -> Check for Updates (this takes you to a web page where...)
2) Click on the hyperlink on the web page that says "Check for Updates"
(system is examined and list of updates appears)
3) If the resulting list does not include a critical update for Office 2003
then it is already installed on your system.

If you think that you did not install the Office 2003 critical update but
the web site is not detecting that you need it, you can go directly to the
information/dowload page for the update and try to install it from there.
Here's the link for the English version of the update page:

The problem was not limited to PowerPoint - all the Office
Apps couldn't read their own files. So I went down to XP
and reinstalled - still the same problem. Only 97 worked.
So I figured it was a system problem and reverted to a
restore point a month back. Then I reinstalled XP and then
2003 and it all worked. Strange but true.
