Powerpoint 2003 automatic startup

When I log into the PC via XP, Powerpoint automatically starts up and then
asks to send an error message. It then opens in safe mode. I downloaded all
updates, uninstalled and reinstalled no luck. Any ideas?

I would disable all add-ins and see if that helps.
What add-ins are loaded?
http://www.pptfaq.com/FAQ00655.htm

(Note to Steve -- MSN Site Search turns this up using add-in as keyword,
Google Site Search doesn't. Both turn it up using add-ins as keyword. Go
figure.)

Also, if PPT crashes, there should be a box to check to try to restart
automatically. (I believe this usually comes up if PPT crashes and wants to
send an error report.) It's checked by default. If you do see it, uncheck it
so PPT doesn't keep doing the "start automatically" loop.

What's odd is that this happens when you log into XP. Maybe check in
C:\Documents and Settings\<Username>\Start Menu\Programs\Startup and make
sure there's no PowerPNT.EXE or some type of Office add-in or anything
lurking there.

(Note to Steve -- MSN Site Search turns this up using add-in as keyword,

I'll tell them to fix that pronto.

(Breath-holding optional <g>)

Weird, though, isn't it?

The following add ins are listed: I don't know enough about Visual Basic to
know whether I can remove these under File? Can you advise if you think this
string could be my problem? I also checked startup as you advised and found
nothing there.

Many thanks for your assistance

Regards Chas

Following is the Event Viewer Error Report:
Faulting application powerpnt.exe, version 11.0.8110.0, stamp 4519c2a0,
faulting module asfaddin.dll, version 3.0.0.2700, stamp 357d79e0, debug? 0,
fault address 0x00001c32.

Does this add any light?

Thanks Chas

That seems to point to the Publish to ASF add-in.

If you can't unload it using Tools, Addins, look for the addin file itself, which
is here:

C:\Program Files\NetShow Services\Tools\Publish To ASF.ppa

Quit PPT then rename the addin file to give it a .PPB extension instead of .PPA
That'll temporarily disable it.

See if that helps.
Does this add any light?

Thanks Chas

Ah, good catch. I didn't even notice that.

I think this add-in was designed for PPT 97, wasn't it? Or maybe 2000.
Regardless, it's quite old and wasn't designed to work in newer versions of
PPT. I'd imagine that it could definitely cause problems.

Well, start with the ASF one because it's not going to require a registry
dive.

Basically, head to this folder:
C:\Program Files\NetShow Services\Tools\Publish To ASF.ppa

Right-click that "publish to ASF.ppa file" and name it something like
"publish to ASF.OLD" You may need to turn on file extensions. See Make
Windows show file extensions and hidden files
http://www.pptfaq.com/FAQ00781.htm for specific instrux on where to do that.

Oh, make sure PPT is closed when you do this!

I FOUND IT - I DID IT! Thanks to the two of you I have located the problem
and removed. The add in was a "Coms Add In" and after finally getting time

would not have solved the problem without your assistance.

uncheck
it
so PPT doesn't keep doing the "start automatically" loop.

What's odd is that this happens when you log into XP. Maybe check in
C:\Documents and Settings\<Username>\Start Menu\Programs\Startup and
make
sure there's no PowerPNT.EXE or some type of Office add-in or anything
lurking there.

downloaded
all
updates, uninstalled and reinstalled no luck. Any ideas?

I FOUND IT - I DID IT! Thanks to the two of you I have located the problem
and removed. The add in was a "Coms Add In" and after finally getting
time
to read help properly I located and removed the file. It was the OmniPage
Coms File causing the problem. This was a big learning experience and I
would not have solved the problem without your assistance.

Many thanks

Hi Steve

Sorry did'nt work... (wot a pain). I'm sorry to keep bugging you but I
am a
stay at home Mum with not a lot of time (6 and 4 year old kids). Can I
disable the file in VBasic?

It's probably not accessible from there, but see if there's an
uninstaller for
it (Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs)
Many thanks for your patience.
Regards Chas

:

Well, start with the ASF one because it's not going to require a
registry
dive.

Basically, head to this folder:
C:\Program Files\NetShow Services\Tools\Publish To ASF.ppa

Right-click that "publish to ASF.ppa file" and name it something like
"publish to ASF.OLD" You may need to turn on file extensions. See
Make
Windows show file extensions and hidden files
http://www.pptfaq.com/FAQ00781.htm for specific instrux on where to
do that.

Oh, make sure PPT is closed when you do this!

Ok the two of you have been fantastic working on this for me but...
how
do I
disable the add in's? I've checked Help and its not that clear.
Sorry
have
had no training on VBasic - I don't want to stuff it up.

:

ISTR people reporting problems with OmniPage in the past. I'd
begin by
disabling that add-in.

The following add ins are listed: I don't know enough about
Visual
Basic
to
know whether I can remove these under File? Can you advise if
you
think
this
string could be my problem? I also checked startup as you
advised and
found
nothing there.

Many thanks for your assistance

(Note to Steve -- MSN Site Search turns this up using add-in as
