We have just started testing Office 2003 and hav
noticed that users on Windows 2000 Professional SP4 have an issue when printin
pictures embeded into Powerpoint.
The problem is that 2003 takes the picture shrinks it i
half and prints a duplicate copy of it or shrinks it so much that I have
10 images one on top of the other. This seems to happen only when I
print to a color printer eg Xerox DCC400, XP12 or DC204
If anyone has seen this please let me know i
you have found any fixes. Thanks

Do you have the latest updates for PowerPoint/Office 2003?
Highly recommended!

I've got 2003 on Win2K SP3 here and no similar problems. Can you try backing SP4
out to see if that isolates the problem?

Hi Steve,

Thank you for your reply.
I have downloaded and installed all Office 2003 updates.
I don't understand what you mean by backing SP4 !. I saw
on another forum the following and have tried to contact
Microsoft but were not aware of this issue. I have also
emailed Aaron hoping for some feedback.

Re: Color Printing in Word and PowerPoint 2003

Thank you for posting this additional info, Aaron, so I'll
know what to tell the user the next time I hear about this
issue.

As for your patch/fix, you probably don't want to post
that to an FTP site.
MS will often make hotfixes available -- but they ask that
people call in to
receive them. This is because hotfixes haven't been tested
extensively, and
so strange things can happen. I'm betting your fix will
probably be
something along the lines of a hotfix.

Since our color printer isn't an HP I wouldn't check them
for an answer. Our plotter is however and HP support has
already opened a ticket with MS. I have opened a ticket
with MS Support and they have aggreed that this is an
issue with Office 2003 and Windows 2000. They will work
on a fix and send it to me ASAP. If anyone would like the
patch please let me know and I'll be glad to post it on
any FTP site.

This is quite bizarre, and I've not heard of PPT doing
anything like this. I wonder if you just need new printer
drivers for the Windows2000 users to access?

Have you checked the HP forums to see if they've run
across this before?

Windows XP users do not have the issue.

The problem is that 2003 takes the picture shrinks it in
half and prints a duplicate copy of it. So if you were
printing 1 picture at 4 X 4 the result would be two off
that pictures in at 2 x 2 in the 4x4 square. This has
happened on all of our color printers and our HP
Plotters. If anyone has seen this please let me know if
you have found any fixes. Thanks!

Sorry ... the infamous "Dancing Fingers Stumbled Again" trick.

That was supposed to read "backing OUT SP4" ... in other words, uninstalling it
as a test.

Hi Steve

SP4 and SP3 cause the same problem. Duplicated printouts.!.

I'd guess that it's a driver/PPT interaction then; with SP3 and PPT 2003 here,
I'm not seeing it (printing to an HPLJ4V Postscript printer and an Epson C84
non-PS inkschpritzer)

[TOP ISSUE - Are you having difficulty opening presentations in PPT 2003
that you just created in PPT 2003? -

Hello Theo,

This is known issue but there is currently no fix (it seems to be a problem
in the interaction with the Windows Spooler in Windows 2000 and some
printer drivers (not just Xerox) and is specific to the way that some
images are saved/created before being inserted into Office 2003
applications.

The workaround, at this point, is to open the images in some kind of image
editing tool and resave them in another format (for example, *.PNG) and
then re-insert them into your presentations/documents/workbooks.

Office 2003 System includes a new tool which facilitates bulk
resaving/exporting images to new formats, called Microsoft Office Picture
Manager

1) Start -> All Programs -> Microsoft Office -> Microsoft Office Tools ->
Microsoft Office Picture Manager
2) Add a picture shortcut to the folder containing the original images
(File -> Add picture shortcut...")
3) Once the picture shortcut has been added, select the shortcut from the
"Picture Shortcuts" pane
4) "Edit -> Select All" to select all of the images (If you want to convert
all of them)
5) Choose "Export pictures" link from the "Getting Started" task pane
6) Choose "PNG Portable Network Graphics (*.png)" from the "Export with
this file format" list in the task pane, and
7) Click "OK"

The folder will not contain both the original images and *.PNG versions of
the images at original size (resolution)

8) Insert the *.png images into your presentation/document/workbook and try
printing again.

We have just begun rolling out PowerPoint 2003. We are
running Win 2k Pro service pack4. We have noticed the
same problems in PPT printing to Xerox Tektronix Phaser
860 using the latest available drivers. We printed to an
HP 8550 Color and duplicate images did not occur. We found
in testing that if you change the image to bmp or gif the
duplication does not occur on the Xerox. We need a fix
ASAP. If anyone hears anything please contact me via
email.

Our company is finding the same issues.

Still nothing from Mircrosoft, just "workarounds" that are time consuming and therefore cost money. Another fix - SOMETIMES * and I stress that* if you compress all the images in the presentation (does not have to be done one at a time) the duplicate images are fixed. Every so often it doesn't work, but for the most part we have found that this works (for now).
We have also been discussing this issue with Xerox, and it seems that only the most current equipment (we have a Doc12, and are looking into the new 3535 machine) are "office 2003 certified" or some nonsense like that.
Anyhow, that's all i can suggest for now, hopefully they are working on a fix.

John,

Our company is truly suffering with this problem. We have upgraded 700 employees to Office 2003 and many use a variety of color printers--Cannon ColorPass, Savin Color, HP 8500, and more. The Cannon prints correctly if we upgrade the machine to Windows XP, but this fix did not work for the HP 8500. Also, some that we upgraded to Win XP are very unhappy with the color changes. The Cannon printed the picture correctly if we checked Print Directly to Printer, but the quality suffered. Our Marketing staff is about to behead me. Is a hotfix available? We just have too many pictures to convert them all.
