I'm using powerpoint 2000 on xp and it will not display
the full font name in the font drop-down list. It only
displays the first letter.

In addition, whenever I save a file it shortens the name
to the first letter only.

What is causing this? I have tried running it in
compatibility mode and it makes no difference.

First, uncheck the compatibility mode. That will make the problem worse. The
file name problem has been reported at least a couple of times with
compatibility mode being the problem.

Okay, now for your font name problem. Do you have a printer installed
locally? If not, install one. That is how PPT knows what fonts and what font
names it has to play with. Next, does the problem get any better if you
re-boot the machine? Finally, did it used to work? If so, can you tell us
what changed?

It stopped working after applying a variety of Microsoft
patches from the windows update site. I have completely
uninstalled and reinstalled Powerpoint and the problem
still persists. I tried compatibility mode and noticed no
difference so I turned it off. There is no change on
reboot. I have also tried Office Pro and Office Premium
versions of Powerpoint and the problem exists in either
one.

There are several printers installed on the machine. I
will attempt to install another and see if there is a
difference.

I tried the local printer trick. It didn't work. The font
changes to only the first letter as soon as you click on
the drop down list. The list itself lists the whole name
but as soon as you choose it it changes to the first
letter only.

My previous post explains all the other things we have
tried. I neglected to put my email address in so it shows
that it is from an anonymous sender.

Thanks,

Robert

One other thing to try:

Choose Tools, Customize
On the Options tab, remove the checkbox next to "List font names in their font"

I tried that. It doesn't make a difference. The full name
shows up in the list either way. Once you pick your font
the name disappears and only the first letter appears in
the font box. The same type of thing happens when you
save. The full name appears in the save as dialog box but
it only saves the first letter of the name.

It certainly sounds like something is damaged or there's a conflict between the
control that displays the fonts/names and something else.

Does it also happen after you've completely restarted Windows and immediately
gone into PPT w/o running any apps in the interim?

Have you tried shutting down your anti-virus software, if any?

I already tried it. The office erasers don't work on
WinXP. I uninstalled then I manually removed all the
registry entries for Office. I also manually deleted the
Microsoft Office folder from program files. I then
reinstalled everything. No change. It still doesn't work.
I have numerous other XP machines that don't have this
problem. This one is the newest laptop we have and I can't
get this problem to go away.

I'm at a loss, I'm afraid.

Ah, but what about creating a new user on the computer and installing Office
while logged in as that user? Install to the same folder you'd normally
install to in order to avoid dupe sets of files. Sometimes user profiles get
corrupted and cause all sorts of mysterious problems.

Had a thought (I know amazing, isn't it) - may have nothing to do with
anything, but...

How many font files do you have on your system? I am wondering if PPT is
having problems handling them all.
