I want to power an IDE cdrom without it being attached to my pc but
dont know how. I tried attaching a spare PSU I have but I cant turn
it on as the ATX connector needs to be connected to the motherboard.
Does anyone know how I can power the cdrom without having it attached
to a computer?

Thanks
Allan

No it doesn't, it can be jumpered.

Put it in an IDE HDD external enclosure which has its own power supply.

I would go down this route but I prefer to try it without spending
money first ;-)

If you left a CD in the drawer of the CD player, just use a paper clip and
push it in that small hole in front of the drive till the drive drawer pops
open.

No I havent, it is for attaching the cdrom to an Amiga 1200 - the
Amiga power supply is not enough to power the computer, the HD and the
cdrom unfortunately.

Extend a molex connector outside the PC case.

There is no PC! I have the cdrom and a PSU only. I am going to try
jumpering the ATX connecter - if I am successful and live to tell the
tale then I will let you know ;-)

OK... Why do you need to power a CDROM when it is not connected to anything?

I strongly suspect that you are wanting to do the wrong thing.

Do you know why you would want to?

I have it working by shorting the connection between the green and a
black wire :o)

The reason I wanted this as I am connecting the cdrom to an old Amiga
but the Amiga power supply didnt have enough power for the cdrom. It
all works just great now :o)

ATX power supply connector pinout:
http://pinouts.ru/Power/atxpower_pinout.shtml

To turn on the PSU, jumper the PS_ON pin (14) to any ground pin
(black).
