my computer usually powers down ok, to the point where i
switch it off. it will then sit, seemingly completely
shut down for a couple of hours, then, without being
touched, reboot automatically.

any ideas what might be causing this?

cheers,

andrew

Andrew,

This is not a Windows XP issue. The said symptom is a feature controlled by the BIOS. Enter the BIOS and look for the feature 'Wakeup' [different names by different BIOS manufacturers], or "Resume-ON Time" or 'PME Events'. You need to turn that feature Off. If you're don't know how to enter the BIOS, please read the motherboard manual. It should contain the instructions.
