Power-unit issue?

It's just taken me 45mins to switch on my computer and it's been like that
for about 3 months now.

On the first switch on it gets to the windows xp startup screen and then the
screen goes black (as in switched-off black). There is an audible click from
the computer when this happens and the only way to proceed seems to be to
restart. Once restarted it goes through the failed startup page where I get
to choose which windows I want to run then the same happens again at the
startup screen no matter which type of windows I choose. This process goes
on for about 30-50 restarts until I finally get into windows.

Once in windows the same thing will happen if I leave the pc for more than
10mins or so (i switched off the power-saving thing for the screen just in
case but the same happens anyway).

I've been told that I probably need to either re-install windows for some
reason or replace/disconnect the power unit. Can anyone pin down what this
problem is for me and how it might be resolved?

Thanks in advance.

Mike.

Pin down the problem? NO! Not without having the computer in front of us to
physically troubleshoot the problem.

We can certainly give you "pointers" to go on so that YOU can pin down the
problem.

It seems like you may have a problem with your power supply. When was the
last time you blew the dust from it using low pressure air? It is amazing
how much dust accumulates within after a year or two.

A tech would likely just connect up a new power supply and leave it lying on
a mat outside the case. If the computer runs fine, source of problem pinned
down. Now you can either replace the supply or see if the old supply has
become so clogged with dust that it is not cooling itself properly. Hint:
heat destroys components!

What do you mean by "which windows I want to run"? Are you referring to the
advanced startup menu (safe mode, safe mode with networking, etc) or to a
boot menu offering a choice for multiple installations of Windows?

If you have multiple installations of Windows on a single partition (C: for
example), this could be a part of your problem. There should only be one
install of Windows per partition. In troubleshooting situations (saving
data from a mucked up installation), you might have two on a single
partition - however this should only be a temporary condition. After the
data has been rescued, Windows should be reinstalled clean so that there is
only one Windows on the partition. If not reinstalled, problems can develop
- if not immediately, they will appear eventually.

NOTE: Multiple Windows on separate partitions is referred to as
multi-booting. This is very different than troubleshooting by using
parallel installs (two Windows on the same partition) however parallel
installs result in the same boot menu asking which Windows to load.

I had this happen and replaced the power switch on my machine cause it was
pressed so many times I guess it wore out, machine seemed to think it was
being pressed when it wasn't.
