Power supply

Rookie

It looks like my current psu has started giving up. It's about 350-400W
(don't remember exactly), and since I installed a more powerful graphics
card with its own molex connector, I often get messages about the gpu
not receiving enough power on startup and there are random reboots as well.

So I decided to upgrade the psu, and here are the candidates:

has some noiseless designs, but I am not sure about the resultant heat
issues.

have access to locally.

I should also add that I have an older (AGP equipped) 865 motherboard, so I
wonder whether the plugs those new psus come with are compatible.

Knowing your hardware specs would be useful, but as a blanket
recommendation the HX620 is very good.

The Tier 5 section in this thread, gives a list of product brands to avoid.
Additional models, not in the list, are discussed on the additional
pages of the thread. For example, they say that Chieftec are made
by ChannelWell.

As for connectors, a lot of supplies with 24 pin power, feature
the ability to slide off and disconnect a 4 pin section. Sometimes,
in an advertisement, the main connector is termed "20+4", to show
that the supply supports both 20 pin and 24 pin applications. There
are a very few supplies, where the 24 pin connector is fixed. You can
still connect a 24 pin (fixed) supply to a 20 pin motherboard, but on some
motherboards, a capacitor near the power connector, prevents a
24 pin power supply from fitting into place.

Thanks, I have a celeron 2.6, an AGP card that requires a power connection,
a few pci cards and two sata disks. The case is a typical rather smallish
case by today modern standards.

Though I may switch to a more modern system in the future, using more than
one graphics card is certainly not within my plans.

Thanks, I can testify the chieftec psus are a total waste of money, as
they come preinstalled with pcs sold by a major supplier here and I have
often sees them "performing" in practice.

The Corsair HX620 is made by Seasonic and is of very good quality.
Judging from the hardware you list, the Corsair VX450 will suffice at
half the price of the HX620. If you can't find the VX450, look for a
Seasonic rated at 400W - 500W.

Depends on the age of the case, I have had Chieftec PSU made
by Sirtec that did fail, but for reasons of power surge that
no PSU can be assumed to withstand and later after reparing,
still work ok today... over 5 years later.

IMO, brand means a fair bit, but actual review and pictures
of a specific unit count for more.
