Hello, I just bought a Fantom USB drive and the power supply light
alternates between glowing green and going dark every few seconds.
This doesn't happen with my laptop power supply (it stays green the
entire time it's plugged in). Is this something that might be normal
or is it likely to be defective? Thank you.

A steady light sounds normal. A flashing one doesn't.

Is this with the power supply connected to the enclosure ?
Does it flash if you run the adapter by itself with no load ?

And does the enclosure currently have a disk drive in it ?

What kind of drive is in the enclosure ? A Seagate 7200.10 perhaps ?

Also, if the power adapter has a rating printed on it, you could
include that in your next post. It might be X amps on +5V and
Y amps on +12V. Assuming it is a dual rail adapter.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for your reply. I checked a few things and here's what I found
out. The power light cycles on/off every second or so. But only
while the drive is off - when the drive is on, the light is solid. So
maybe that's normal then? To answer your questions... this is the
Fantom USB 500 Gig external drive. I'm not sure what the different
components are (it didn't say on the outside). The back of the drive
and the adapter seem to state both 12V and 5V - didn't see anything
about X or Y but it might have been there (I don't have the drive
nearby). What does dual rail mean? Thanks again.

Some drives that use an external adapter, have a three or four pin connector.
The voltages are +5V (for the controller board on the hard drive) and +12V
(used for things like the hard drive motor). Those are the two rails normally
used for a 3.5" drive.

I tried this site, but there really isn't any info of value here. So
I cannot really confirm anything about the feature set of your
enclosure. This site is, like, generic, and could be describing
just about any enclosures.
