oops got to write another one
Done a destructive restore after other problems but had this prob before and after the restore
Sometimes my power supply has a glitch and forces a cold reboot. Upon loading I get the message CD this and that and sometimes its the visual software but each time my pc simply shuts down. My pc has been restored to its birth and its still doing it. This is the HP 512C No hardware changes . Also got Tripp-lite battery backup so its not the house current playing tricks on me
Any ideas

Try replacing the power supply or use some voltage monitoring software.
Faulty PSU is the most likely cause.

HP under-sizes their power supplies. They also use small
cases and often mini-power supply to save interior space.
You may find that your power supply is weak, perhaps you
have added RAM, hard drives, optical drives or expansion
cards and USB devices, all require more power. Peak power
is during booting as everything is coming up to speed.

You may find that your power supply is inadequate (or
failing) and that it is cheaper to buy a new case with a
larger power supply than to try to find a larger Wattage
power supply that will fit in the HP case.

I faced this a year or so ago with a HP6465 that had only a
115 Watt micro-ATX power supply. No dealers locally carried
the micro-ATX power supply so I bought an Antec case with a
250 Watt power supply for about $50 on sale at CompUSA.

It is simple to simply move all the parts from one case to
the other. I also gained a lot more room for the hardware
that I had, better access for cooling and cleaning.

I do not know if HP motherboards will accept the power supply connections in
the "new" case.

An ATX V12 power supply has connectors compatible with all
mobos. The bigger question is the backplane panel. You may
need to move the panel from the HP case to the new case if
they don't match the mobo connectors. This is fairly easy
to do. (I had to remove the standard panel that came with
the Antec case for my custom-built computer but Intel ships
the correct panel with a retail mobo. I used a D845GBVL. A
small plastic hammer will help remove the panel and a six
inch section of 2x4 will serve as a good block for fully
inserting the new panel without bending it.)

Many reasons could cause this reboot. Not just power
supply. Power supply controller on motherboard or even an
intermittent power switch. Minutes will determine if these
are reasons for reboot as described in "Computer doesnt start
at all" in alt.comp.hardware on 10 Jan 2004 or
http://tinyurl.com/2t69q

Also gray "Power Good" wire would tell a computer to
shutdown. Just another voltage to look at. A better chart
for voltage limits:
Voltage Wire Color Min V Max V
+5 V Red 4.75 V 5.25 V
-5 V White -4.75 V -5.25 V
+12 V Yellow 11.4 V 12.6 V
-12 V Blue -11.4 V -12.6 V
+3.3 V Orange 3.135 V 3.465 V
+5VSB Purple 4.75 5.25
!Power On Green 0.8 2.0
Power OK Gray >2.4 when power is good

If power supply is undersized, then it will be very obvious
in this 'few minutes' procedure.

AC electric should have no effect. Computers must work even
when 120 VAC falls to 90 VAC. That is AC voltage so low that
incandescent bulbs are at less than 40% intensity. How often
do lights dim that low? Never?

If using NT based OSes, then the system also stores a system
(event) log. What does that log report? Why do you assume
this failure is due to power supply?

I have been noticing a large segment of the msnews groups are overrun
with queries about OEM products. WHY? Microsoft does not support
OEM let alone branded OEM.
