Hi there,
On the subject of PSU's (again) does anyone know roughly how much power a set of computer components will draw?

For example - would a very cheap generic 420w PSU be able to happily power:

Prescott 3.0GHz
DFI Lan Party 875 pro
512mb (DC'd) Geil PC4000 mem.
ATI Radeon X800XT 256mb
DVD burner
Western digital raptor
samsung SATA 80Gb
floppy drive
couple case fans

Read answers in my previous post i.e may be able to deliver full power constantly but maybe for a few moments

BUT i do not know how much power components actually draw!

i have heard very beutiful things i.e 3DMark03 scores in excess of 12000 with the XT

its £352 and i am saving!

all i want is something that means i can play FS2004 on fullest settings lol its a very demanding game

Ok...I have been informed by that site that my power thingy is going to be at least 400w for that kind of system (X800XT draws near 100w in games and that isnt an option on the site) i have been looking at Q-Tec power supplies on overclock. dirt cheap. wondering if anyone has anything to say about them?

Narrowed down to 2 possibilities...

Novatech own 550w dual fan cooled
Q-Tec 550w dual fan cooled

both just under £30

enough juice in them i guess just none of the fancy extras...

CP: Sorry, but both those PSU's are not particularly too good. In fact, they're crap, if you want me to be blunt.

Especially the Q-Tec. At other Forums I've read constant bad news about those, they're rubbish.

Sorry, but there's no such thing as a free lunch.

Go Antec or Enermax, they cost more money, but they'll see you good in the long run.

And that PSU rating site tends to overrate, a 400W should do you just fine.

oh...ok then!!

hmm...kind of out of my budget though - will have to hunt around i guess.

cheers man!

Found this X-Pro one for £44 its a 400w and REALLY looks pretty damn cool!

- 12cm Blue-LED Cooling Fan Doubles Airflow with Half the RPM & Noise.
- Ultra Ventilation (Honey Comb Structure) Maximize Ventilation & Minimize Air Resistance.
- Serial ATA HDD power connector
- 8x gold-plated connector for 5.25" device + 2x gold-plated connector for 3.5" device
- PFC Environment Friendly Technology improves Energy Utilization to cut your Electric Bill in Half.
- Cable Management Kit makes your PC Tidy & Neat and Smoothes Airflow to improve Cooling.
- Anti-Corrosive Titanium-plated casing
- Over Voltage Protection
- Short Circuit Protection
- 100% Full Load Burn-In

Are you sure 400w is enough?

If i were you, and had all that expensive kit in my computer, i would settle for nothing less than the Tagan 480watt PSU, its abit expensive at around £60-£70, but its has excellent cooling and is rated one of the best PSUs money can buy. You can get it from here http://www.coolercases.co.uk/power_supplies.htm, and there is also a reveiw of it on this site!

Well aparently i need only 400w of power. The X-Pro one i looked at has good reviews and all that voltage protection and active PFC so i would assume as long as PSU's have all those qualities then they would do their job just fine?

I'd say 400W is enough, but it never hurts to have a little current in reserve.

I've never heard of X-Pro, what site/supplier is it available from?

All things considered, particularly your budget, I'd say give it a try.

But (there's always a 'but' isn't there? ;) ) a little more cash spent now may save you some down the line. Or a stitch in time saves nine. Is that the right saying? I dunno, but u no wot I meen :D

Lol i do - aparently they are very well made. From Novatech but they arent generic so availiable elsewhere. It has all the qualities i need and seems as if its a quiet one with a 120mm fan and honeycombed cooling. I particualy like the cable tidying thing and the sata connectors

chris,

your obviously determined to try a cheap one due to your budget, so why not buy a cheap one and let us know how you get on!

or when you decide to do your rig a favour and give it the constant supply of juice it needs.

"you get what you pay for!" this has proven to be true on many occassions for me. you can bend the rules abit with most pc componants but few push theeir luck with a PSU and get away with it.

i figured that it had an ok amount of juice and all the voltage protections the list goes on... so i thought it would be a suitable part? same qualities as my 400w tru power.

Well im using a cheapo freebie 400watt one, that was come with a cheap case.

I've had no problems with it what so ever, but if i could i'd get the Tagan, because processors, HDD and graphics cards aint cheap! they deserve to be fed right ;).

I'd opt for the Tagan if you can find it cheaply - I was really, really impressed with it (as per the review!). :)
