I am new windows XP User. Use computer abt six hrs
per day. Don.t understand different types of settings.
Should I turn computer and moniter off at nite by
clicking swith or set for automatic OFF or Standby.
None of the default power settings use
turn off hard drives. WHY?
BOTTOM LINE - Should computer be turned off at nite or
on stand-y, hibernate, turn off hard drives??????
Any suggestins greatly appreciated.

My personal choice and observation is to turn off the monitor using power
management....could save a few watts/day. The hard drive is another story.
It doesn't take spikes very well and turning them on and off could shorten
their lifespan and cause you all sorts of problems.

There are many opinions on this, but the rule of thumb that I use is: If
you're not going to be using your computer for several hours then turn it
off.

Hi, Bob.

Welcome to perhaps the longest-running debate in the computer world. If you
don't get many responses it's because half of the users are hoarse from
yelling, "Turn it off", and the other half of us are just as hoarse from
yelling, "Leave it on!" Partly it depends on whether you are one-guy,
one-computer, no net but the Internet, like me, or whether you are in the
middle of some big office full of computers.

I turn mine off at night, but I'm not about to get sucked into the
debate...again. ;^}

If the choices in Power Options for "off" are confusing, just use Start>
Shutdown> Shutdown when you are done using the computer for the day.
