Ok thngs are getting weirder & weirder. I have a new pc (couple mos. old).
1st the pc stopped going into standby or hibernate on it's own. Now oddly
enough it seemed to go into standby on its own. This while moniotr had been
blanked out for at least a couple of hrs. Then it came back out of
hibernation. My guess in the span of time set between standby and hibernate.
Ok, I was *accepting* it not working power save on it's own. But I looked at
power schemes and all that was there
was Portable/Laptop & Home / Office Desktop. There used to be a scheme
called Energy Star.
Anyway I saved a new scheme and called it Energy Star. Oddly enough it
doesn't seem to be saving.
This is an HP PC W/Xp OEM. Outside of doing a complete system restore, any
ideas?

Rick,
I figured it is s/w as at 1 time thnigs did work. Now for the most part I
was accepting that I couldn't get the pc to stay in standby. If I set the
keybd hot key to go into standby it works. But it comes out when it should
go into hiberantion.
But setting the key to Hibernate the pc works. But for some off reason last
night the power light started blinking (meaning in standby). Then as it did
when I manually put it into standby, after a certian amt. of time it came
out of standby. All by itself.
Now it seems to be acting as it did before last night. Screensaver kicks
in, then a few mins. later monitor goes blank. HD is also set to stop, but I
don't really think it does either.

What made me think it may be a windows driver was the settings in Power mgt.
that used to have an Energy Star setting as well. Now it just has Laptop or
Desk. I tried saving one sceme and naming it Energy star it doesn't seem to
save. In that I mean it doesn't stay on the list.

Now I have fooled w/things in MSConfig startup and gotten noplace. On my pc
in General Selective startup is already checked. As are all options under it
(using orig. boot.ini).

Now what I was not totally aware, but suspected, was that the power settings
were mainly designed for laptops & are spotty on desktops. But the fact I
know others w/similar problems kind of makes sense.

When experimenting with Power Options - saving additional power schemes
with various settings - I saw some weirdness in Power Options as well.
Closer examination showed that when the list of available schemes in the
registry reach a certain length (more than eight), that's when the problems
started. Since that time, I use the default schemes. If necessary, I alter
them to my liking but do not save them with new names. Windows remembers
the altered settings and uses them.

You can reset the default power schemes following the directions in this
article:
Power scheme options are unavailable on a Windows XP-based computer

Also, MVP Kelly Theriot outlines the default values of the relevant
registry keys in the "Power Management - Change Power Management
Configuration" here:

Sharon,
Thanks, I now see several options listed. For some reason though Energy Star
is not there.
Now I have to see if the stand-by / hibernate work *normanlly*.
