Power Schemes greyed out

This problem is very similar to that posted by Greg on
9/13/2003.
In Windows XP on my Sony VAIO, the list of Power Schemes
in Power Options has recently disappered.
Below the frame is titled "Unknown" and all settings are
greyed out.
The PC now switches off video after about 5 mins and then
goes into standby after about 15 mins.
This is causing me considerable frustration and I would
be very grateful if anyone can help.

Does the Sony system provide their own Power Management tool? Some systems
incorporate their settings into the main Power Options applet. Others will
add a separate icon in Control Panel or the Start Menu.

Thanks Sharon - yes Sony's Power Panel utility is meant
to be used instead of the Power Options in Control Panel,
however even changing settings in Power Panel doesn't
make any difference.
Have de-installed Power Panel and settings in Power
Options are still greyed out.
Have re-installed Power Panel and it makes no difference.
Sony say do a complete system restore, which I would like
to avoid.

Hi Kelly and thanks for your message.
I downloaded the edit and double-clicked on it.
I was told it had been successfully incorporated into the
registry.
I re-booted and looked at Power Options in Control Panel.
Unfortunately nothing appears to have changed and there
are still no Power Schemes listed. If you have any
further thoughts I would be grateful.
Regards Jon

Hi Jon,

See if the edit on line 204 (right hand side) helps:
