2 things really.
I've been removing virii for several days now. It would seem XP is especially
vulnerable. or harder to clean than a win98 machine. The same thing pops up
over and over.

Something happened today the search from toolbar died. whatever I put up there
ie:sam spade, now appends http:///sam spade to the address bar. jumps you to
a dead link. Obviously. it's a syntax thing.

I just fixed this exact same problem on win98 a week or two back, but my notes
no longer exist on this machine on what I did. I thought I most likely used
repair Internet explorer, but that option doesn't seem to exist, or I can't
find it anymore and the troubleshooter doesn't mention it either.

does the repair option still exist and if so where ?

System file checker isn't exactly Internet explorer specific.
What I used to have was ie6 setup.exe on the win98 machine, and whenever things
got nasty, it was simpler to try a repair, then go for a reinstall if things
were that bad. repair usually did the trick.
That's what I'd prefer vs this system file checker.
Hello
How to run System File Checker
Start>Programs>Accessories>Command Prompt>(type) sfc /scannow (notice the
space between sfc & /)

How to do a repair install, scroll down to How to Repair Install.
