I have switch on problem with my PC computer. The computer will not
switch on immediately when I press the switch on button. It's a fault
only developed in last month or so. I have to press and hold my switch
on button for quite long time before the computer will power up. Once
it has been powered up it works fine. If I shut it down and start
within few minutes it powers up ok. However, if it's shut down for 12
hours then it takes long time to power up. Is the fault with the power
supply, switch on button or the mother board? Can anyone help and
advice what check I can perform to determine the fault. An advice will
be very much appreciated. Thanks PJ.

Unless you have a ultra compact case like a HP pavillion with a shrunk 200
watt psu, then any 300watt+ psu will fit they are nearly all universal fit
to the back plate. check the space behind the cd rom drives b4 splashing
out.

You could spend big time swapping major components in a
desperate hope that might be the problem - OR - find reason
for failure in less time while learning how the three major
components interplay. Power switch, motherboard controller,
and power supply. Which one will you keep replacing until
something appears to work?

Procedure was described previously in: "I think my power
supply is dead" in alt.comp.hardware on 5 Feb 2004 or

and again in:

It takes minutes to swap power supply - and still not know
if that was the problem - because it is intermittent. It
takes seconds to discover which really causes this
intermittent problem.

In addition, the procedure even shows how to learn if supply
is undersized. Professionally designed systems run just fine
on 200+ watts. Those who never first learn why failures
happen then must advocate the Home Improvement concept of
"More Power". Options are the 'brains' or 'brawn' techniques
- your choice.
