When trying to insert a space or edit between letters, the
back space key inserts a square box very similar to a
drawing box. It may also insert a % sign. Also, the
action is opposite to the normal movement of the back
space edit and does not delete the letter it should
delete. Some of the boxes can actually be edited to
insert text in them. This does not affect other programs
of Office. It only happens in PP.

Have you tried a full reboot? This has been reported with previous versions
of PowerPoint and in those cases, usually resolved after a complete shut
down, power off, and reboot.

One user here reported this same problem running Windows XP with Office XP/SP1
but mentioned that a hotfix made available later sorted the problem out.

That suggests that later Office XP SPs might include the hotfix.
