make sure your drawing tools are showing if not: go to View Toolbars
Drawing and the drawing tools will open choose the line that does not have
arrows on it. Drag a line under the word you want to underline. Next, with
the line you just created still selected, right click : format auto shape
select the dashed line. hit OK

Hi Jackie,

You best bet may be to insert a line, change the
formatting of the line to dotted and then place it
directly under the text.

The only way that I know how to do what you want to do, is to draw a line using
the line drawing tool to the length you need, Select your line, then from the
Format (or right Click) menu select Autoshape, and change it's parameters to
dotted and adjust the thickness to what ever you need. If you use this a lot, I
would copy it to the clip board and paste it whenever needed. You can also
change the colour which will produce a different effect to get attention to a
point.

[CRITICAL UPDATE - Anyone using Office 2003 should install the critical
update as soon as possible. From PowerPoint, choose "Help -> Check for
Updates".]

Hello,

PowerPoint does not have the specific text formatting capability that you
are looking for,

If you (or anyone else reading this message) think that PowerPoint should
provide additional font formatting capabilities (dotted underline,
strike-through, double underline, etc.), don't forget to send your feedback
(in YOUR OWN WORDS, please) to Microsoft at:

http://register.microsoft.com/mswish/suggestion.asp

As with all product suggestions, it's important that you not just state
your wish but also WHY it is important to you that your product suggestion
be implemented by Microsoft. Microsoft receives thousands of product
suggestions every day and we read each one but, in any given product
development cycle, there are only sufficient resources to address the ones
that are most important to our customers so take the extra time to state
your case as clearly and completely as possible.

IMPORTANT: Each submission should be a single suggestion (not a list of
suggestions)
