Hello,
The MS Organization Chart 2.0 (MSOC2) application is no longe
provided
with Office products (beginning with Microsoft Office System 2002
and, if
upgrading from a previous version which included MSOC2, it is remove
from
the system because it is "discontinued" technology. Because of this
if you
try to edit an MSOC2 object in Office 2003 you will receive th
generic
error that occurs whenever you try to edit/open an OLE object fo
which no
server application is available. In Office 2002 we attempted t
convert
MSOC2 charts to the new Office Diagramming feature for organizatio
charts
but, because of differences in capabilities there were some MSOC
chart
styles which did not convert well so this conversion is no longe
attempted
in Office 2003.
If, in the short term, you are running PowerPoint/Office 2003 an
still
need to edit organization charts created using the old MSOC2 tool
you can
download the tool from Microsoft Office 2003 Resource Kit:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/2003/journ/msoc2.htm
In the long term, you should begin to recreate your charts in eithe
the
new diagramming feature of Microsoft Office System 2003 or, for more
complex charts, look at using the great Organization Chart features
available in Microsoft Visio 2003.
If you (or anyone else reading this message) feel strongly about any
specific enhancement requests for creating organization diagrams in
PowerPoint/Office, don't forget to send your feedback to Microsof
at:
http://register.microsoft.com/mswish/suggestion.asp
As with all product suggestions, it's important that you not jus
state
your wish but also WHY it is important to you that your produc
suggestion
be implemented by Microsoft. Microsoft receives thousands o
product
suggestions every day and we read each one but, in any given product
development cycle, there are only sufficient resources to address th
ones
that are most important to our customers so take the extra time t
state
your case as clearly and completely as possible.
IMPORTANT: Each submission should be a single suggestion (not a lis
of
suggestions).

| 1. Is there a way to convert these to Off2K3 versions, so that
installation of the old program isn't required?
Nope. There is no converter available in Office 2003 to conver
MSOC2
charts to the new Office Drawing diagram format.
| 2. If not, is there an easy way to install the old program durin
the
installation of Off2K3 (we're using the "full CD" method, to kee
the
cache files)?
Nope. The MSOC2 installer is only a client installer (not a
administrative
install) so it would have to be installed separately on clien
machines
after Office 2003 is installed.
|
| Finally...if we do install the old program, does that force new
documents to use the old method of creating org charts, or, jus
allows
for editing of old documents, with new ones using the newe
method--if
it forces the old method, I'd hate to install it, as, it seems that
that'd be perpetuating the problem.
|
Nope. All of the built-in entry points for creating new Organization
Charts, in Office 2003, will use the new Office Drawing diagram
format/tool. If you install the MSOC2 tool from the Office Resourc
Kit, it
will only be used to edit existing MSOC2 objects or, if you need t
create
NEW MSOC2 objects, it will be listed in the Insert -> Objects dialo
as an
option (so it's unlikely that one would accidentally create a ne
MSOC2
object when you really intended to create a new Organization Char
using
the new diagram tool).
