I check "Always Show Icon on the Taskbar" in the 'Advanced' tab of Power
Options in Control Panel ... but the icon shows up randomly. Using main
power or battery makes no apparant differnce.

Any suggestions?

WinXP SP2

Thnaks.

One possibility is that the icon is hidden when it is inactive.
You might want to try the following:

Right click an empty area on the taskbar and select Properties
from the menu.
Towards the bottom of the Taskbar page you'll see "Hide inactive
icons".
If the box is checked then click on the Customize button.
On the "Customize Notifications" page find the entry for your
Power settings and select it.
A drop down menu should now be available on the right from which
you can select "Always Show".
Click OK twice.
The icon should now be displayed all the time.

So far, so good ...

I followed your suggestions but took the opposite tack. I checked the "Hide
inactive icons" box ... it was, in fact, unchecked ... and then changed the
behaviour icon-by-icon. Interestingly, the battery icon was in the "Past
icons" section.

Thanks for illuminating another aspect of XP!
