Power Management USB vs Firewire drive

Hi all - I've got a question.

I have a couple of external IDE drive enclosures I use for backups.
One is USB and then other has USB and Firewire. I noticed that when I
attach to computers running XP with USB then external drive never
powers down, but when I attach with Firewire, it does, even on the same
enclosure.

Can anyone explain this? It there a setting to get Power Management to
work through USB, or is this inherent in the protocol?

Thanks,

David

Your USB port does not power down. I found your post when I was searching for
a way to do just that.
Have you found a way to manage your USB port power? or does anybody know how
to do that??

Nope - I just run it off 1394. I was just reading about the eSATA
enclosures coming out. I'll probably go with that next time I upgrade.
