Power for case fan

Sometime ago I had the motherboard changed at a local shop. Lately I opened
the case and found the case fan is not pluged into the motherboard but into
the hard drive(I think) power connector. And that explains why the case fan
doesn't show on the motherbard monitor.

Anyone know the reasoning behind connecting to the HD connector?

Let me clarify.

The small 2 prong connector was cut off and the two wires were pushed into
the backside of the hard drive connector.

it sounds like a 4 pin molex connection.it might have slim 3 pin on it too
but I think not.. if you want to monitor your fan or fans you need the 3 pin
types in order to plug into your board.....

very nice job they done there for you.i'd replace the fan with a nice quite
one ys-tech make good fans for the right money & they go straight into your
MB...

Too much current to be powered by the MB?

Yeah, the old A7V Asus boards were bad about blowing the MB fan bus if you
put more than a couple fans on it or a fan drew a hair more than a tiny tiny current.

If it only had a 2 prong connector it wasn't showing in MBM in the first place.
At least not in terms of RPMs; MB would have still controlled voltage to it.
If it had a 3 prong connector, just add a jumper for the third monitoring wire,
another connector, and run it to the MB connector.
You won't be able to control the speed via the MB but you can still see how
fast it's running.

Let me clarify.
