I power down my computer with Windows XP. Then, when I
press the power button to start it again, it simply
doesn't stop, no matter how I press the button. I leave
it and when I come back later, it starts normally. In
other words, it only starts when it feels like it!

I opened the computer and made sure that the button is
pressing the power button inside the computer.
Everything seems fine. I think that the problem is
software. Can anyone help?
..

You may have problems in the power supply. Dust build up / heat / defective
unit.

All the button does is send a close signal to the supply. That in turn,
triggers a device that enables the supply to turn on and power the computer.
Unless you have the proper test tools, you can't even tell, for certain,
that the push button is, in fact, making electrical contact / closure when
it is depressed.

Suggest you take it to the shop.

If you're saying that you press the power button and nothing happens (you
said it didn't stop; I'm guessing you meant it doesn't start) then you've
got a hardware problem of some sort. There's no software running at the
point, as the hard drive isn't turned on yet.

If that's not what you're saying, maybe you can clarify.
