Power Control Problems

I can only get two power control settings to appear. I have changed power
options and saved other settings, but they don't show again after I close the
power option dialog box. I checked the Registry, and the other options
appear as policies 2-9, but only policies 0 and 1 show up in the dialog box.
I also tried expanding the powercfg.cpl from my installation CD-ROM, but
nothing changed. I suppose I could change the CurrentPowerPolicy key
manually every time I want to change the power option, but I am wary of
editing the Registry. Does anyone have a suggestion? Thanks.

Could you please provide more information
Some technical information we need to have.

Sorry about being short of info. I am using Windows XP Home edition,
Service Pack 2 with all updates to date. My computer is a custom-made
Pentium 4 with 2G RAM. The problem arises whenever I try to change my power
config settings, either through the ScreenSaver tab of Display options, or
through the Power Options control panel. I can change the settings and seem
to be able to save the new combination of options, but new saved options do
not show up later and do not take effect. Also, previously saved options do
not appear in the drop-down list, except for Home/Office and Laptop. I tried
the fixes I found from other posts (as described in my original post) to no
avail. If you need more info, please let me know. Thanks again.

Thanks for the references. I checked them out, and they don't seem to be on
point. According to Device Manager, my system is ACPI compliant, so the ACM
options don't even show up. However, this is a custom-made computer, so
there may be a BIOS issue that might not show up except for this power option
problem. If so, it's not a big deal and I'll just live with it. But thanks
for trying.

If to you a requirement to make changes is not necessary, you have no APC
installed to power on due to a power outage and do not need to attend to
hibernation or the stay on time issue then why bother. The APC unit
installation requires Power Options to be turned off but they can be managed
following installation. APC is Back-UPS power. Read http://www.apc.com/ for
details or visit Circuit City to see the units available. They work just fine
and you must use the non-surge plugs not the surge plugs for conditioned
power, this is power that will be more stable than the house current, the APC
unit compensates for power fluctuations (watts) [the load itself] but will
only turn on when you select a value of low power (about 88 volts) & high
power. Your issue is the tray icon appearing and your trying to cope with it
as you would any new icon appearing to you. Learning is AOK.
