If there's an NTL UK user out there, it might help - this doesn't preclude
all other offers of help!

Re-installed XPPro + all updates.
OE6 e_mail settings correct (send / receive e_mail OK) but something's wrong
with Newsgroups. Can download all headers, subscribe to a newsgroup, and see
all the posts (headers AND bodies) and create a reply/new question - just
can't send it - get following error (pasted)

Outlook Express could not post your message. Subject 'Re: XP BIG-TIME
SCREW-UP', Account: 'news.cable.ntlworld.com', Server:
'news.cable.ntlworld.com', Protocol: NNTP, Server Response: '441 Posting
Failed ("From" Header not in Internet Syntax.)', Port: 119, Secure(SSL): No,
Server Error: 441, Error Number: 0x800CCCA9 - (end of error message)

Have tried contacting NTL, (2 days later, still waiting for reply) - this
message is via the tortuous Windows Help and Support route, on-line.

Server (must be correct, else wouldn't see ng's) is news,cable.ntlworld.com -
"General" tab - Name = Silvabod, e_mail address is my real e_mail adrress,
Reply address = (e-mail address removed) (similar worked before, and I've
tried others)
"Include this account when checking for mail" box is blank (checking it, no
difference)
SERVER tab - name is news.cable.ntlworld.com, log-on box is blank
CONNECTION tab "connect using ...." box is blank (default setting is LAN) -
I've tried setting it anyway, no difference

"Advanced" tab - NNTP port no is 119, all other boxes un-ticked (though I've
tried "Send using plain text - no joy)

Long Q, am sure there's a short answer - please?

Hi

I use NTL, but not their News Servers!! Have you tried using
msnews.microsoft.com for the MS News Groups?

Other than using these servers;
msnews.microsoft.com
also try;
news.cable.ntlworld.com
news.ntlworld.com
news.tesco.net

I'm on NTL, rarely use either of their newsservers - to many problems

Thanks, folks - set up new nes a/c (via Tesco) - which works - problem seems
to have been the "reply" address - I used two, the "real" one and a "spoof".
It only requires the one, changed to "spoof" id.

All I needed was to get ng's fully working again in OE6 (the only way I know
how to read/subscribe, these many years). If there's a better way, do tell
....
Have succeeded, using news.tesco.net, and subscribing to the ng(s) I want -
different news server to my ISP's, but, it works.
Is there a major advantage/benefit in using msews.microsoft.com as news
server? Only one I can think of. it's dedicated to MS ng's, rather than the
"full" range of >30K possibles (and I use one or two of them).

So far, none of your posts have used msnews.microsoft.com

NTL's News Servers are always throwing up error messages and crashing -
that's why I don't use them.

Unfair, DL!
I DID read/take notice of your response (which included news.microsoft etc)
but it also included news.tesco.net - (used as quicker to type) ... your
advice solved my problem, and I thank you sincerely for it. (tho' why you
suggested news.cable.ntlworld.com, when that account was the root of my
problem, as per original post - (the OE6 pasted error msge).... was I
accused of not reading???

I also succeeded in restoring (importing) all my messages and address book -
by reading a response in the "Outlook Express" ng - poser had similar but
not identical problem as mine, but the same advice worked.

So, DL, your original reply was helpful. OE6 doesn't have the facility to
"rate" responses (like the "on-line" ng) - you get a "very helpful" from me,
despite your later comment.

Thanks again.
