I am getting errors when trying to use the abovementioned programs. Won't
open them and on the error page I get something with wininet.dll on it.

(removed SP2 which made IE work, but then got popups and my browser gets
hijacked)

Machine was riddled with spyware and possibly trojans, so I loaded the new
MS Spyware, which seems to be working well, but now this.

I am now using Firefox but it's not too friendly when trying to get MS
updates.

Is this where I shoudl be thinking of reformating the HD and starting from
zero?

Hi LG8 :-)

Try uninstalling and reinstalling the two programs, then install SP2, then
reinstall them.

Perhaps this might give you a bit more information on the Media Player
situation in SP2:

To help improve security, Media Bar has been removed from Internet Explorer
6. For this preliminary release of SP2, however, the Group Policy settings
for Media Bar have not been removed. Because Media Bar is no longer
available, these settings will not function.

Although you can no longer use Media Bar, you can listen to digital media
by downloading and using Microsoft Windows Media® Player 9 Series.

You should also download, install and run the following programs in SP2 as
well. Some types of malware and scumware take more than spyware programs to
detect and remove them. Run them in Safe Mode. Uninstalling SP2 does not
remove the bad guys from your system. :-)

Jan - thanks... tried all of this, and it worked for a while until I decided
to reinstall SP2 ... I am back to not having a functioning IE6 ... still
getting the wininet.dll error.
