I've just rolled out Update Rollup 1 to a number of Win2k SP4 machines on
our Win2003 domain however each time they boot there is now a 10-15 minute
pause at "Preparing Network Connections" before they complete booting. Once
they have got through that they operate normally with full access to the
domain resources.

Has anyone else seen weird pauses like this or have I got a network
configuration problem here?

Paul.

Hi,

Could you please check if msxml3.dll and msxml3r.dll in the
C:\Winnt\System32\ folder does not have a file size of 0 bytes.

Hi,

Could you please check if msxml3.dll and msxml3r.dll in the
C:\Winnt\System32\ folder does not have a file size of 0 bytes.

On all 4 Windows 2000 machines that have this problem msxml3.dll = 1146 kb
and msxml3r.dll = 43 kb so that doesn't appear to be the issue.

We too seem to be having problems with this, but have also found that some
other programs like windows messenger and outlook not to work properly.

After further investigation we have found that Sophos antivirus seems to be
causing some sort of problem and the stoping of scanning in c:\winnt\system32
fixed the problem. Do you to run sophos or an other AV?

Hi,

Advisory: Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows 2000/XP/2003 - conflict with
Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 SP4
http://www.sophos.com/support/knowledgebase/article/3287.html

<quote>

Customers using Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows 2000/XP/2003 version 5,
may experience problems after updating to Microsoft Update Rollup 1
for Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4).

Once this update has been applied, computers can take up to fifteen
minutes to log on to the network.

What to do

Exclude the following file from on-access scanning:

C:\winnt\system32\mswsock.dll

</quote>

I ran into similar problems only on my W2k-TS server, IE and Outlook, ceased
to work, so I had to remove the update for now. I have Network Associates
Virusscan Enterprise 8.0 installed.

Below are the error messages:

Outlook:
Faulting application outlook.exe, version 10.0.6626.0, faulting module
speedscreenapi.dll, version 2.3.1467.1, fault address 0x00003056.

IE:
Event message could not be found, but contained these strings: iexplore.exe,
5.0.2920.0, speedscreenapi.dll, 2.3.1467.1, 0000400d
