I posted a question yesterday and posted my email
address. No answers to my question but my mailbox got
flooded with spam and viruses.
What's up with that? Is that normal?

Yes that is the result of the Swen virus. I didn't check
my settings and posted a newsgroup question with my
address and now get well over 150 virus messages a day.
My custom filters keep them mostly out of the inbox but
it is annoying.

I never receive Spam - but then my IQ is above average -

Any time you post your email address to the Internet, you are exposing
yourself to email address harvesters, of which there are many.

So, are you saying someone's IQ has to be above average to
not receive spam? Or are you just trying to sell
something?

congratulations on the gator hide business. I know a guy, looks like Santa
Claus, originally from up by me but now down in north Georgia. He makes
some very nice and very expensive custom holsters and belts. you should
contact him.

My buddy is in Angola Prison, 90 days for killing a Yankee and Life for
killing his wife. He makes most of our items to sell. You may want to
visit and buy from this Louisiana Prison http://www.angolarodeo.com/ - Why
didn't I think of that...?

I think I'll have to stick with my transplanted Yankee for the holsters. I
doubt they've got very good "molds" for that sort of think available to the
inmates. ;-)

One upside I've found with the spam is that it doesn't seem to make much
difference if you just post a few times or a lot. the amount of the spam is
pretty much the same.

it doesn't seem to go away if you mess with your email address for posts
after you get burned either.

Hi,

The same happened to me ... I got it from posting in an Ebay newsgroup ... I
used to put something like "removethis" in my address, so that spam spiders
wouldn't find out my address. Then I stopped doing that because people on
some newsgroups are very intolerant about masking your e-mail address. But
to hell with them ... I've taken a new address and I'm masking it again.

You could also use a "trashcan" address, for instance a Hotmail or Yahoo
address you use only for newsgroups or for subscribing to certain services.
Once a week, you clean out that trashcan address and your real address stays
out of sight for spam people.

PS I'm afraid you'll have to kill that address and get another one. I've
been getting virus messages for a month now on that address and they aren't
dropping in amount.

Then I stopped doing that because people on
some newsgroups are very intolerant about masking your e-mail address.

Recently, Microsoft posted a message to all of their newsgroups, which
advised people (among other things) to "DeSpamify" their return email
addresses. So you won't have to worry about such intolerance here, my
friend. :)
