I'm following frequently posted directions for migrating AD from Win2k to a
new Windows 2008 server. This is the first 2008 server in the directory and
I've run into a few issues. On the new server it shows DNS, and Active
Directory Domain Services under Roles. In the event log on that server I
see this: "The DNS server was unable to create the built-in directory
partition ForestDnsZones.<domain>. The error was 9906. Event ID 4512. I
get another error that is identical except it lists the partition as
"DomainDnsZones.<domain>". I have not yet transferred the 5 FSMO roles from
the "old" Win2K DC. Should I go ahead and proceed with that step or do I
need to create something else first? Thanks.

Bill

Ok, moving the 5 FSMO roles worked. Once that was done and the system
rebooted it came up clean with no errors. I had to create the new DHCP role
manually though, for some reason the older machine wouldn't let me export.
I do have one more issue. When looking in AD Sites & Services at the
Servers list under Sites, I notice that the "old" AD server (that is going
to be deleted soon) is listed as GC for the DC Type. So is the new 2008
server, but the other Win2000 server is listed as DC. Is this something I
need to be concerned about? I plan on taking the "old" AD server offline
soon, and the other Win2000 server will be removed when I add another 2008
server to the mix in the next couple of months. Thanks for all the great
help!!

Hello Bill,

I can not really follow your description about the 2000 DC's in AD sites
and services. In a single forest domain make all DC's Global catalog, normally
only DC's are listed in AD sites and services.

So what do you mean with:

" notice that the "old" AD server (that is going to be deleted soon) is listed
as GC for the DC Type. So is the new 2008 server, but the other Win2000 server
is listed as DC. Is this something I need to be concerned about? "
