I have a file named desktop that opens up with Notepad. It is in almost every folder on my computer. Norton says that my computer is clean of virus. I'm also not able to change anything in my shared documents folders (they are read only and I can't change it

Is this a virus or did I jack something up?

This file is not part of any virus. It's used to hold various information
about the folder that it resides in. it's full name is 'desktop.ini'. The
only reason you see this file is because you have one of the options for
viewing the contents of folders set to show hidden files and folders. As
far a the shared folders, you are not too specific as to what you are
attempting to do. Are you trying to change the properties of a folder from
read only to read/write or are you talking about files that are in the
shared folders. You can not change the folders read/write attributes
anywhere under WindowsXP.

Its desktop.ini and it specifies how you want to view that folder in
Explorer if I recall correctly.

What you want to do is go to (in an explorer pane showing you one of these
desktop files):

Tools Menu -> Folder options -> Click on the 'View' Tab
One of the checkboxes should read 'Hide protected operating system files
(Recommended)

I think you've accidentally unchecked this box ;) Checking it again and
clicking refresh in your window should fix it.

All of the desktop.ini files showed up one day in every folder. I didn't have the show hidden files option selected. I'm not able to add any new files or folders to my shared documents. It is telling me access denied, then I try to change the options on the folder from read only to having the read only unselected, I OK it then open it back up and the option is changed back. The whole thing that is driving this it that I'm trying to install some new software and it needs to make some folders, but it can't because it is get access denied errors. Thanks for the help.

As I said before, you can not change the read attribute of a folder and
besides, it has nothing to do with your problem. Most likely your access
rights are likely cause of your problem. Examine the security tab of this
folder. It will tell you if you are in fact allowed to write to this folder.
