Ok, I think that I may have a virus and it is difficult to track down.
I can not go to www.symantec.com or www.mcafree.com but I can go to
regular websites(not pertaining to major anti-virus programs) and I
have updated my norton anti-virus 2000 and tried to do a full system
scan twice and the scanner froze both times. Once at 97% and again at
99%. What could cause this and how might I fix it.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Open regedit and check the HKEY LOCAL
MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run key to see if there
is a variant of the virus on the machine.

A virus could definitely cause this. If you have access
to a friends pc I would use it to go to symantec's site
and do some research there. You might even just want to
download some fix tools for some of the more popular
viruses, put them on floppy disks and just run them on
your pc, ie; klez, bugbear, slammer... You could also
check your temp folder. Most viruses start there. If
you have some files in there that your system won't let
you delete then check them out. That's how I found the
kournikova virus on a pc once.

does anyone know of a virus that would cause these symptoms? Over all
my pc runs fine. I never have lock ups, it never randomly
restarts...all is well other than the anti-virus aspect such as
blocked from the websites and not able to use my anti-virus scanner.
Again, thanks in advance.

Interestingly enough, if I ping or tracert www.symantec.com it
actually pings and does tracert on the loop back IP. I will show you
what I am talking about. I am still thinking that it is a virus but I
am having difficulty tracking down what virus would do this. I did
see some old ones from 2000 that would do it but can not convince
myself that this is one of them.
