Once my PC has started up - eventually, I noticed that it was running a process which wouldn't allow me to perform any functions whilst this was going on. On checking the Task Manager, I noticed that a process labelled 'wuauclt.exe -SYSTEM' was using a lot of memory doing whatever it was doing. This could go on for around twenty minutes until it eventually settles down and I was able to use the PC with no further problems.
I know that there is a trojan of this name, but I am concerned that this may be a legitimate system file which I would not want to remove.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is driving me nuts

welcome to PCR

If the wuauclt.exe file is located in the folder C:\Windows\System32 it is the normal windows auto-update process.

In other cases, wuauclt.exe is a virus, spyware, trojan or worm! take your pic. :D

I changed the "title" of your thread to something a little more appropriate

Many thanks for the advice everybody:)
Evan: I ran those three programs and yes, life is a little better, although with a seven year old computer, I shouldn't expect too much, should I?
