Possible to Use HP 29 Black Ink Cartridge in a Printer (656c) That Takes the 20 Instead?

I have an HP 656c Deskjet and I bought a two pack black 29 ink by
mistake. It takes a 20 black ink instead. I tried to return it, but
I have no idea where I placed my receipt, so I'm stuck with these two
29 cartridges.

I was wondering though, since the 20 & 29 cartridges look identical,
if there's anyway to be able to use the 29 ink cartridge in my
printer? Anyone know of a trick to let my printer take the 29
cartridge? I was thinking of perhaps installing the drivers for the
printers that takes the 29 cartridge (such as 600, 660, 670, 672, 680,
682 and etc), but was afraid that I'd somehow completely ruin my
printer that way.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated since I paid over
$75 (~$50US) for these 29 cartridges and would be nice to be able to
use them. TIA.

Since HP print cartridges include the print head itself in the cartridge
package the likely only difference between the HP20 and 29 cartridges is the
print head part (the part at the bottom that makes contact with the paper).
Unfortunately the printer has to be able to tell the head where to release
ink.

I doubt you would do any serious damage to your printer by trying the other
cartridge, if it will physically fit into the assembly without forcing.
There is no telling whether it will work or not (likely the printer will
refuse to use it), or the results you will get if you actually can get the
printer to accept it.

Likely the driver installer won't allow you to install it if you don't have
the printer it was designed for ... and even if it does the driver certainly
won't run a printer it wasn't made for. So the driver option is out.

Like I said, the only way to find out if it'll work is to stick it in and
give it a shot ... I seriously doubt that the printer will even attempt to
use it, and I have no idea what kind of print you will get even if it does
attempt to print with it.

For all I know it could work just fine ... but I doubt it.

Yeah, you're right, Drumguy. I stuck the 29 cartridge in and got an
error message saying that the cartridge is not useable in the printer.
Darn!!! 75 bucks down the drain!! Thanks anyway!

You could always redouble your efforts in finding that receipt ... they may
not take back the one that was opened, but you could at least get your money
back for one. (maybe? I see you bought the 2pack)

Quick question ... where did you buy these cartridges?

Got them from Costco. They're usually pretty good with letting
customers return merchandise. I heard they even take opened software
if you say you found out that it's not compatible with your system.
But they just refused to do anything without a receipt.
