I want to have a quiet PC and have been looking at the Asus A7N8X
motherboard. It has a fanless heatsink on the northbridge chip.

Is this the exact same northbridge chip as the Gigabyte 7N400 board?

If so then is it ok to take the fan of the 7N400?

Yes same chipset but the HS on the A7N8X is pretty big, I can't measure
it right now but I'd guess it's about 2 to 2.5 inches tall, where as
other boards may be using a smaller HS which requires a fan.

My guess, is gigabyte placed that fan for OCers and as a selling point. I
would bet u could remove it but just a guess

My guess... don't think you are gonna cut much, if any, noise by removing
the chipset fan????
Cheers
