I'm being serious, this isn't a joke.

I just saw a tv commerical a little while ago from Staples, one of the
office supply chains, that is offering a FREE install of Vista if you
buy it from them. Didn't catch any further details, was channel
surfing.

Don't know if you want to trust some clerk in a office supply store to
install a OS for you, but I thought I'd pass the info along if anybody
is getting desperate. Really desperate.

sure any retail chain can offer you an Install of vista. it's simple...
let's see...

Fdisk, Format c: wow Vista installs fine.. oooppss.. you wanted your data
backed up... sorry .. didn't you read the disclaimer were not responsible
for your data.. (or we will charge you $159 for data backup - geek squad)
oh wait... Vista update seems to have failed.. probably need a Bios
update... non avail.. oh well we tried .. have a nice day.. goodbye...

are you going to reinstall WinXP.. or is my PC now a brick?

no .. you can do that with the restore disks that came with your PC ....
"it didn't come with any" call the vendor and order them "I did they are no
longer avail" ... well GOOD NEWS.. we have a Sale going on of Windows XP
home edition full version.. interested in buying..? instead of giving you a
refund on Vista you just purchased .. we can just do an exchange of the
product and the rest of the cost will go towards paying up to install XP
Home..

in all seriousness.. you should be checking the vendors Website for updated
bios, drivers etc (especially laptops) and running the compadibility testing
tools before even attempting an upgrade.
