I have been working this for several evenings and just noticed that my system
date was set to December, about 6 months off. After correcting the date, the
Defender got updates fine. It hadn't worked for over a month, so I don't
know how long the time was off. I also see suggestions to run Windows
Update, which is good as I noticed Defender patches in
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate

Hope this helps

My clock was off about 6 months about one week ago. Coincidence? I am
having the 0x800106ba problem, but apparently you are not .

Have either of you tried uninstalling and reinstalling .NET? That was a cure
provided by Microsoft for a similar update issue that I experienced a couple
of months back.

I deleted Defender - problem solved.
