Hi,
Is there any way of identifying ports and preventing conflicts occuring when
installing devices. I got a USB bluetooth dongle, and as soon as I install
it, I loose my ability to use my dial up internet conection. An error is
repeated on the derver which states port 110 is unavailable. When I
uninstall the device my conection is available again. Ports seem to be a bit
of a black art, will some type of port scanner tell me which ports are used
where and if they have been corrupted or blocked.

Sounds like an IRQ Conflict. The Ports use address ranges written in HEX.

Go to Device Manager and click on the computer icon and it will display all
of the Assigned IRQ's.

But my dialup connection is software and would not have an IRQ assignes to
it. There are no conflicts to be seen in device manager.

You've got a human language conflict. The ports you are working with are not
TCP/IP ports you would scan with a port scanner -- They're x86 hardware IO
ports.

Sounds like you have a conflict with the modem and your USB Root hub.
It could also just be a driver conflict. USB devices all use the IRQ
and IO ports of the root hub they are plugged into.

Look in device manager and see what devices are on port 110, both with
and without the bluetooth plugged in.

What type of modem, bluetooth, OS, etc.. do you have?

Looks like you are on the money there Jim, I uninstalled the Belkin
Bluetooth devices and my connection returned. It had a fax and modem
included which I had not seen before.......I think it was conflicting with
my USR modem
