ports-need to open

I need to find out how to open my parellel port so that
my maritime maps can receive gps data from my gps. and
to identify the port..I am using a gateway laptop with
one parellel port..

Just a guess since no one else has responded --
Try going into your BIOS and setting the parallel
port mode to "ECP" or "EPP+ECP", if it isn't set
to one of those already.
