Portable under Domain connected to workgroup

I've a win2000 portable configured under PDC in domain. When i try to
connect my portable to other networks configured as workgroup i can't
see others PCs. I've configured my IP in the correct range (because
there aren't dhcp), but I still can't see others PCs.

Why this happen? Are there a way to see the network without change
domain setting in my PC? Or every time i need to reconfigure my PC
under domain and under workgroup?

Can you ping the other PCs by IP address?
Can you (eventually, after being on the network for a bit) ping them by
name?
Why this happen? Are there a way to see the network without change
domain setting in my PC?

If the above works (ping by name), you can just map drives, etc., without
browsing anyway...
Or every time i need to reconfigure my PC
under domain and under workgroup?
