Portable Scanner?

Basically I am looking to be able to fax paper documents from my laptop.
Rather than haul a flatbed, or buy one of these $250 portable jobs, is
there a somewhat cheaper alternative designed for faxing?

The Canon LiDE series of scanners are CIS based and are USB powered, and
fairly light.

The CanoScan LiDE 25 weights just a little over 3.5 pounds. It sells for
about $50.

You would need some fax software and a Fax Modem to take the scanned image
and send as a fax.

Windows XP is capable of fax. You must have a fax modem in the computer.

Interesting. It seems the real portable ones go for $160+. I guess
I'll wait and save a bit.

That is actually what I use to send faxes from my PC.

Are these printed docs that are only on hard copy, not in Word, or
received as email attachments like *.jpg? Forgive me that I don't know
your level of computer literacy -- I'm just making sure you're aware
of print to fax (built into Windows and requiring a fax-modem), which
can be done from any application that prints to a printer. Plus, docs
and graphics can always be attached to an email. Or if I've
unintentionally been insulting, it looks like you have to find the
smallest, lightest flat bed scanner, hopefully newer and USB2. Will be
helpful to many to know what that is.

I wonder if those little hand held / roll along the paper scanners are
still around.

Heh, I'm in I.I. so I know what I'm doing.
The docs are hardcopy. I have XP's fax ability installed so I just
print to that and listen for the squeal of digital data.
