I want a portable hard drive and I was looking at this one.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136181

It says........
Pros: Great Product! I own a mac but this hard drive can be used
with Windows. Just go to the western digital website and download the
software for free.
Cons: It should come with windows software pre-installed. But I
really don't care all that much since I use a Mac.

Does that mean that Hard drives can't just be connected like a camera
and have a drive letter automatically created?

I have XP

They are talking about "DOWNLOAD THE SOFTWARE FOR WINDOWS FROM THE WD
WEB SITE!", the "software pre-installed" it comes with is for Windows
(R) only. So thay guy said "I really don't care all that much since I
use a Mac". And Mac runs another OS as well as Windows(R) is an OS is
running on your x86 PC. The "software pre-installed" is just a
suppose, the real apps must be downloaded from that link at that page.
The software must have some applications for E-mail, keeping the data
asynchronous, surfing the internet, IRC, media player, saving personal
documents and so on. The software should be able to run on your Win
XP. If your are not satisfied with it, you can change it to softwares
for the same use called "Portable Application", such as PortableApps:
http://portableapps.com/

You can call "Support Phone Number: 1-800-275-4932" to get more
information about whether the portable HD would work well with you
machine configuration without paying a cent.

Flash drive technology is surpassing conventional hard drive
technology. I would buy a USB flash drive.

The included software...

"Automatic backup - Back up important projects to multiple destinations
including files servers, portable drives and My Book. Synchronize project
files to keep them current and secure. Set it and forget it; every time
you save a change it's automatically backed up."

"Formatted for Macintosh - Set up with HFS+ Journaled formatting for
complete Macintosh compatibility." -- easy enough to fix

"Note: This drive is formatted and the pre-loaded software is designed
for a Macintosh operating system. Driver and utilities for Windows users
is available for download. See Knowledge Base article 1550 for more
information."

http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=1550

That article doesn't explain where to download the automatic backup software
for Windows. I think I'd want proof the software exists first, before I
bought the item.

You shouldn't need any software to use it. If you connected via USB,
it should present USB Mass Storage class, and a built-in driver would
make it available. You can finish preparing it, in Disk Management. after
which it should be available in Windows.

You again. It is always the same several guys replying here. I think
the English of these guys is not as well as others I read out of this
group.

Flash discs have a shorter life than the HDDs no matter how, and its
maximum storage capacity is far less than that. Although Flash discs
is more "solid state" and the data storing on it is safer, but it cost
much more than the HDD for the same capacity.

Thanks for all the replies.
I had not noticed it was for the Mac.

No. The downloadable software is probably backup software,
management/monitoring software or similar, but the drive should work
just as a removeable hard drive without any pain.

When they have a thumb drive at 1.5 terrabytes , lemme know!!!

Prove it isn't.

Is cost your only concern when buying something?

You misspelled "I don't get it". Universal Serial Bus is a
superior portable storage technology. In the foreseeable future,
it will be a better fixed storage technology too.

What do you need a portable 1.5TB hard drive for?

You asked why, well here's why.

Backup, video editing (Mini DV video is around 13GB per 1 hour tape)
mastering multichannel audio, my complete 10 year archive of my digital
photography etc......

I currently have a 1TB boot drive in my main PC, and (3) 1.5TB drives full of
data in my system, plus and external USB2.0/eSATA drive holding a 1.5TB drive
for backup of my most critical data. Plus i use an old P4 in my basement
running a pair of 1TB drives as a server running FREENAS as a UPnP
AV/DLNA Media Server for my music, video collection . And as a data server for
the whole house. I have 3 boys, each with their own PC and they want to have
access to the music and video server too.

Then to top it all off i have a Netgear Media player attached to my upstairs
Tv which i stream all of the music and data to my receiver and TV. Actually
the PS3 and Xbox3600 can stream it too but the standalone EVA8000 gets used
for this and the others for gaming and bluray playback.

128GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive $399.99

256GB SATA II Internal Solid state disk $589.00

32GB Compact Flash $73.99

Yes,

No... Your prices are inflated. For example, one 64GB flash drive
is much less than half the cost of your listed 128GB drive at
$400.

Kingston DataTraveler 64 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive
$144 with free shipping at Amazon

Unless you want to make another assumption, that the original
poster's files are > 64GB.
I'd say cost was a factor to take into account,

Clearly not the only factor, especially when you do not know the
size requirement. Obviously not the only factor when you are
talking about portability.
You assume much, know little.

You are the one doing the assumptions, including that the original
poster (and any other reader) is a moron. Even an idiot can tell
whether available flash drive device sizes per cost are
acceptable.
True, but portability is just one factor to cosider when doing
harddrive backups.

Portability is the major factor when talking about portability.
Why would you assume it is for hard drive backups?
Do announce when "the foreseeable future" becomes "the present"
Until then, try dealing with the here and now.

The foreseeable future is the here and now, here. I am already
using a flash memory SSD main drive.

Yes. That's what happened when I connected my cheaper MyBook
Essential Edition into my XP computer.

BTW if you ever want to open the enclosure, such as to change the
internal drive, here are the instructions:

http://carltonbale.com/2008/01/western-digital-my-book-opening-the-case-removing-the-drive/

Some other (older?) versions of the MyBook enclosure require removing
a screw hidden under a sticker.on the side.

One fifth the storage capacity for one and a half times the
cost. Or ~320MB in flash drive storage for $720.00.
Ya, that's a heck of a deal.

Unless you need less portable storage than that.
Or that he needs more than 64M of capacity, which might be why
he looked at a 320 MB.

Possible, if not likely. But some other reader might be looking
for a fraction of that.
True, but I would think 320MB of hard drive would be an
indication of the size requirement.

Possible, if not likely. But the subject is "portable hard drive"
and should not preclude discussion about better technology.

Setting the size requirement at 320GB is an assumption. Suggesting
that the requirement might not be that much is not an assumption.
Oh, I assure you I do not hink the OP or rvery other reader is a
moron.

Suggesting they cannot tell whether the portable storage they need
is affordable sounds like you do think that readers are morons.
And yet you presume to tell the OP that they are.

A USB flash drive is affordable, depending on the size requirement
and/or budget.
Why would you assume it isn't?

Hopefully you do not do logic for living.
OOOOOOOOOHHH! Was ir really shiny with lots of blinken lights?

Is "ir blinken" German?
just curious
