hello,

Normally, I connect my laptop to
the pc directly to transfer files
between them.

But i decided to fiddle around with
an old router i had.

i discovered an improve performance
with outlook and the i.e., as they don't
waste anymore time searching for the
host, pwoxy, etc....

it seems with the dsl modem going
through the router, outlook and ie
connect to the internet lickity split.

further, i was able to successful
transfer file between the pc and
the laptop via the router as well.

but i had to turn off the windows
firewall on both machines.

i suppose that if i want to keep the
firewalls turned on, i wuold have
to create a port or something.

by using a third party software, the
port number 445 microsot -ds is
opened and seemingly being used
at this time while my pc is pulling
files off my laptop at this time.

i tried adding this port to the firewall
but was told it is in use at this time
and cannot be added.

can anyone advise me as to what
i need to do on the firewalls to allow
the pc and laptop to connect and
to keep the firewalls on for everything
else?

thanks...

You setup the firewall such that it passes ICMP packets.
How you do this depends on which firewall you are using.

thanks for your response and
assistance.

i think however, that i may have
found a solution.

as i had mentioned my issue
basically pertained to how to
configure the windows firewall.

what i discovered is that i
could edit the printer & file
sharing line item listed in
the firewall.

the port number 445 is
listed and can be further
edited.

so on my laptop i entered
the address for the pc.

then on the pc i entered the
address for the laptop.

initially, i had not encountered
any errors. so i am not sure
if this modification will be
stable; as i don't network
my pc and laptop on a regular
basis....

also i had found this page
which gave me some insight:

Hi
An Entry Level Cable/DSL Wireless Router is a combo unit Routing Circuits
and a Switch to connect few-wired computer and an access point to allow
wireless computer too.
These three functions (Routing, Switch, and Access Point) of Networking are
put together in a plastic box to work together but otherwise each one is an
independent entity.
There is No real difference between direct File transfer and connecting two
computers through a Router.
Firewall and all other variables are the same (could be a change in IP
numbers on the trusted Zone, http://www.ezlan.net/faq.html#trusted).
Wireless Cable/DSL Router is a combo device that includes Routing circuits,
Switch, and a Wireless Access Point.
Routing circuit is an electronic circuit that directs Internet connection to
few computers using one shared connection (like a Cop directing traffic).
A switch is a device that acts as a center to connect few computers together
(like hallways that connect between rooms in the house).
An Access Point is a device that allows replacing the wires that connect
computer to a Network; it is sort of a Wireless switch.
When you do a LAN transfer you are using only the Switch which is a
transparent device to the Network.

.
Why not just enable file and printer sharing in the Windows Firewall with
the Network Setup Wizard?
Jim

yes, that is a good question.

i don't have complete confidence
that windows firewall is a perfect
defender and so i have always left
it set to no exceptions, except when
i sync the two machines.
