Hi all..looking at my netgear port forwarding settings.
What do I need to plug in to allow messenger to work
correctly?

ports 5004 to 65535 need to opened? Isn't this a huge
risk?

Also the ip address should be what? The pc's address from
the router? The router has an address of 192.168.0.1

Think I have everything in there correctly but now I am
second guessing myself.

Greetings DC,

Actually just opening the ports for audio/video (assuming that's what you're trying to get
working) won't help you. In order to use audio/video conversations through Messenger, your
router must support Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) which will then open the necessary ports
(just two!) and close them what it's done on its own. Depending on what Netgear router you
have, there may be a firmware update which will allow you to use UPnP.

However, just for reference, to forward a port, you would put the local IP address of the
computer you want to forward to.

Hello Jonathan,

and what do I have to configure, if my Router does support UPnP?

Regards
Markus

Thanks Jonathan as always. My netgear router does have an
option for turning on upnp but when messenger opens it
tells me in options that I am connected through a non
upnp restricted NAT? This confuses me..

Hi Markus,

Absolutely nothing, it will do it all automatically.
The only thing you might have to do is

Hi DC,

Did you just switch it on? If so, you may need to reboot to see the change. Also, even
though it may have the option, it may not be completely integrated properly, so if you
haven't looked for a firmware update recently, I'd check to see if there is one that may
support UPnP "better" (there are some very poor implementations of UPnP).

You also might try turning on the UPnP software in Windows XP -- click Start, then Control
Panel, then Add or Remove Programs, then Add/Remove Windows Components, click Networking
Services, then the Details button, and verify that 'Internet Gateway Device Discovery and
Control Client' and 'Universal Plug and Play' are checked and click OK.

Also if you've run Steve Gibson's ridiculous UnPlugandPray application to turn off UPnP, you
can use it to turn it back on as well:
