Hi,
My normal incoming mail (POP3) port is 110 (the default) for which I have no
problem. However, every so often, my request for email from my server is
rejected and when I look at the port settings, I find that the incoming port
has been switched from #110 to #38444.
I have several questions:
How can I quickly find out what this port is for?
How can I find which application (if any) is doing the port switch?

PS I use McAfee virus scan often. It says my machine is clean.

Thanks,

John

It may be a part of your anti-virus system. In order to check incomming
mails, your mail server actually connects to the virus scanner and it acts
as a middle-man between you and your e-mail server. That way, any virused
mails don't even get to your inbox. My virus scanner does the same with
outgoing mails as well. I guess it does this via a behind-the-scenes tweak;
older systems had you set this up manually.

Check with the vendor of McAfee, they might have FAQ on it. Chances are that
the particular port number it uses are pretty random; you don't need to
access this externally, so there is no need to put it onto a well-known-port
number.

Fraser.
