pornography in fax viewer and also on hard drive

Currently, I'm having more unsolicited pornograpy than
I've ever had before with my previous versions of
windows. Any time I get on I have continuous pop ups
warning of hackers getting into my computer's private
info. How do I stop this?
Furthermore, I downloaded the fax viewer and if I want to
look at a sent fax, my monitor shows obscene photos when
the forward button is clicked on. It didn't happen until
after I downloaded the fax viewer for XP.
Please tell me how to get the programs off my fax viewer
and off my hard drive and out of my registry.

Before you do anything make sure you have an active firewall (prefer Zone
Alarm), second make sure you have a current and active virus checker,
install a pop up stopper unless you have Zone Alarm Pro (built in pop up
stopper), run programs such as adaware, spybot, and a trojan remover.
Otherwise you will just come to more grief.
 
Linda ... I would definitely 'second' Donald's advice on first getting a
firewall, and his suggestion of ZoneAlarm (available at www.zonelabs.com is
a good one. While ZoneAlarm Pro is the best protection, there's also a
basic free version available at http://tinyurl.com/eof

In the meantime, I suspect that the 'continous 'popups' you're receiving are
Messenger windows appearing in the center of your screen (not associated
with Windows Messenger). This is a function built into XP that allows the
network Administrator to communicate with others on the network and is being
used by spammers to sent unwanted messages. You can, if you wish, disable
that function by going to Start, Run, type in 'services.msc' (without the
quotes) and, in the right hand pane, scroll down to 'Messenger' and 'stop'
the service.

This problem happened to a friend at work. The only way
he found to fix it was to reformat his hard drive and
reinstall all programs.
