Disable messenger service in Windows XP.

Click on the START button on the task bar.
Open CONTROL PANEL.
Double Click ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS (OR PERFORMANCE AND MAINTENANCE).
Double click on SERVICES.
Scroll down to MESSENGER.
Double click on MESSENGER.
Change the Startup Type to "Disabled"
Click "Stop" to stop the service
Disable WinPopup in W98.
To get rid of Winpopup (in W98 - W98se):

1. Click Start > Search (or Find) > Find Files or Folders.
2. Search for the winpopup.exe file.
3. Right-click on the winpopup.exe file and rename it to "winpopup.bad" (or
whatever fun file extension you can think of).

1. Go to your Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs -> Windows Setup ->
Accessories
2. Scroll down to the bottom of the list.

If you don't, you can quite possibly disable many useful and vital functions
