I have been getting a load of add popups all of a sudden. I downloaded
Microsoft Defender and I cannot find it in order to run it. Any idea where
it could be?

It's wherever you downloaded it! How could people who can't see your
computer know where that would be? You could try downloading something else
and pay attention to the Save location. Normal locations are on your
Desktop or My Documents, but it could be anywhere. You can also do a search
for "MsMpEng.exe " which is the Windows Defender executable.

Windows Defender is OK, but it wouldn't be my first choice for use in
cleaning up an infected system. Read over these malware removal steps for
suggestions:

You are the only one who knows where you saved it to, when you downloaded it.
Try saving to your Desktop> then double-clicking to install it.

Try these two programs instead.
Defender is not very good at finding anything.

Spybot Search & Destroy 1.6 is a very good, FREE Anti-Spyware Program.
Download, install, update, and immunize your System with it.
Then SCAN with it.
Update it, and scan your System once a fortnight.

For the Free version scroll down their page to either download from
Download.com, or Major Geeks.com

Download, install, update and scan with it.
