Popup windows spawn until laptop is out of Memory

I'm posting this for a friend of mine... He says when he boots up his
laptop, he'll have hundreds of popup windows all over the screen
until it renders his laptop unuseable. (I'm assuming it crushes his
Memory) Does anyone know the name of this Virus? He wants to download
the fix for it at work, and then put it on. He's running Windows 98.
I told him how go in with safe mode so he can run anti-virus etc...

it's generally not possible to diagnose a virus by symptoms alone -
that's what anti-virus products are for (among other things)...

it doesn't sound like a virus, though... it sounds like adware or maybe
(depending on the type of popup) just windows messenger spam... if the
popups are just normal dialog boxes with text and an ok button then
it's messenger spam... if it's opening up in browser windows then i'd
suspect some sort of adware - in which case adaware might be able to do
something about it...
