Popup windows open and close immediately

I have an irritating problem:

On some web pages, there are links to popup windows with explanations of
some kind, which you need to access.

The last few days, those windows (which are not trigged by javascripts) just
open up for a microsecond and then close down again immediately. I have
disabled all popup blockers, so that is not the problem; it must be some
external malware that causes this, but AdAware, NoAdware, ewido or Norton
AntiVirus don't find anything abnormal.

Any hints?

I am using IE 6.0 with Windows 2000 Pro SP 4.

Can you provide some URLs of the sites which are supposed to provide these
pop-ups you are not able to view?

Hello,

Thanks for replying. Those webpages are typically on password-protected
sites like banks etc - but here are a couple of examples from advertisement
sites for hotels:

http://www.kaufmannshof.com/home.php
http://www.kaufmannshof.com/romantik/strandvilla-goehren-lage.php

I loaded both URLs - single left clicked on each of the images, which yields
a pop-up image as the JavaScript command would request of IE.

And you say your machine is clean of Spyware...

I really have no suggestions for you at this time.

Please post back to this thread to indicate if you should require further
assistance.

Regards,
Silj

I am having the same problem and it is driving me crazy. I have my controls
set at "allow pop-ups", and even utilize the "allow pop-ups for this site."
For an example, I could not get the pop-up which would allow me to pose a new
question to this board. I could only get the one for replies. Granted I
usually have my pop-ups blocked and manage them by allowing them on a per
site basis. But right now nothing works. I can sometime get to the page I
want, if the web address is displayed at the bottom of my screen. Please
help.

Hello again,

Yes - there is spyware on my computer; when I run any spyware detection
programme it shows a number of threats, which i then delete - but the
problems still persist.

Now it has become even worse: AdAware and HijackThis are now unable to
complete the scan - they freeze and I have to close them with Task Manager.

I have tried to follow the guidelines in http://aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm -
but as I said, I am now unable to create a HijackThis log.

Any suggestions would be welcome!

Boot into Safe Mode and run the scans there.

Unfortunately, I get the same result in safe mode.

BUT after defragmenting the hard disk I finally managed to get HijackThis to
run a full scan in normal mode. I will post the log file to the AUMHA Forum.

But AdAware still stops and freezes when it comes to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\..

I think I have found the solution: I have Lavasoft Ad-Watch running, and
this programme has a popup-blocker that seems to be causing this behaviour.
When I deactivate the popup-blocker, the popup windows open as they should.

Ad-watch causing issues again - good that you have found your solution.
You may and should report this to Lavasoft;

Thank you for posting back.
