Popup windows are killing me

I have two computers with Microsoft software - one Windows
98 and the other ME. I use Microsoft Explorer as my
browser.

It seems that I average 5 - 10 popup screens every time I
open my browser and the download is eating up my bandwidth
even at DSL speeds.

How can I correct this? I'm not particularly happy with
Microsoft's suggestion of blocking each site as it pops
up. There's got to be a better way.

Please help! Thanks!!

I have 'Freedom' online internet security. It's a online
firewall, anti-virus program that I subscribe to from my
server; it includes a great pop-up blocker (ad manager).

I've been using the latest Google toolbar, which also includes a pop-up
blocker. It has caught 99.9% of them. Be aware that it is a beta version of
the latest toolbar though.
